Talking Animals

Talking Animals ebook ISBN: 0374721319
Publisher: FSG Originals
Author: Joni Murphy
Number of Pages: 304
File: talking-animals.pdf
Reads: 8339183

"Joni Murphy’s inventive and beautiful allegory depicts a city enmeshed in climate collapse, blinded to the signs of its imminent destruction by petty hatreds and monstrous greed: that is, the world we are living in now. Talking Animals is an Orwellian tale of totalitarianism in action, but the animals on this farm are much cuter, and they make better puns." —Chris Kraus, author of I Love Dick and After Kathy Acker A fable for our times, Joni Murphy’s Talking Animals takes place in an all-animal world where creatures rather like us are forced to deal with an all-too-familiar landscape of soul-crushing jobs, polluted oceans, and a creeping sense of doom. It’s New York City, nowish. Lemurs brew espresso. Birds tend bar. There are bears on Wall Street, and a billionaire racehorse is mayor. Sea creatures are viewed with fear and disgust and there’s chatter about building a wall to keep them out. Alfonzo is a moody alpaca. His friend Mitchell is a sociable llama. They both work at City Hall, but their true passions are noise music and underground politics. Partly to meet girls, partly because the world might be ending, these lowly bureaucrats embark on an unlikely mission to expose the corrupt system that’s destroying the city from within. Their project takes them from the city’s bowels to its extremities, where they encounter the Sea Equality Revolutionary Front, who are either a group of dangerous radicals or an inspiring liberation movement. In this novel, at last, nature kvetches and grieves, while talking animals offer us a kind of solace in the guise of dumb jokes. This is mass extinction as told by BoJack Horseman. This is The Fantastic Mr. Fox journeying through Kafka's Amerika. This is dogs and cats, living together. Talking Animals is an urgent allegory about friendship, art, and the elemental struggle to change one’s life under the low ceiling of capitalism.

Latin American Revolutionaries and the Arab World

Latin American Revolutionaries and the Arab World ebook ISBN: 1134804539
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
Author: Federico Vélez
Number of Pages: 204
File: latin-american-revolutionaries-and-the-arab-world.pdf
Reads: 3964350

Recounting recent encounters between Latin American and Arab countries this unique volume explores how, despite both geographical and cultural distances, Latin American revolutionaries constructed an image of the Arab World as one sharing their own political views and interests. From the nationalization of the Suez Canal to Latin American perspectives on the Arab Spring Federico Vélez offers a fascinating historical and contemporary analysis on the behaviour of actors on the periphery of the international system. Contributing to debates regarding ideological and political autonomy the book provides a comprehensive historical account of relations between the countries of Latin America and the Middle East alongside new analysis on the ways marginalized states can sometimes build unlikely alliances in their attempts to challenge structures of power.

This book is divided into multiple parts, with progressively more difficult questions in each new section. Along the way, you’ll learn more about the great Mets players and managers of the past and present, from Tom Seaver to Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, Lee Mazzilli, Davey Johnson, Dave Kingman, Gil Hodges, Jerry Koosman, Jon Matlack, John Stearns, Darryl Strawberry, Mike Piazza, Edgardo Alfonzo, Matt Harvey, David Wright, and so many more. The many questions that this book answers include: • Who was drafted number one overall by the Mets in 1984? • Who was on deck when Mookie Wilson hit his famous ground ball to Bill Buckner? • There are two men enshrined in Cooperstown wearing Mets caps on their plaques, but there are 12 other Hall of Famers who played for the Mets at one point in their career. Name them. • What do the Mets' World Series MVPs from 1969 and 1986 have in common? • The two pitchers who were on the mound in 1969 and 1986 when the final out of each World Series was made were actually traded for each other. Name them. This book makes the perfect gift for any fan of the Amazin’s!

On a cold winter’s night at a federal prison in East Texas, sixty-one year old Beatrice Belladonna Harlow, a sociopath, voodoo priestess, and convicted black widow serial killer on death row, is brutality murdered in her cell by two prison guards and her body secretly buried in the prison’s cemetery. Beatrice’s murder initiated an eerie and dark chain of events. In life she was a voodoo priestess; therefore, she will live forever—that is her bestowed legacy. Yes, this voodoo priestess will indeed live forever, but not in her fleshy, earthly body, but as a spirit, an entity. Beatrice’s legacy is dependent upon one thing: another living human being, a host. Immediately upon death, her entity must enter the body of her chosen host. Thereafter, that unfortunate soul no longer has control of his thoughts or actions. And if that isn’t bad enough, a shocking physical metamorphosis takes place. She had nothing but time; therefore, she spent countless hours planning every detail of her afterlife. She chose as her host her estranged, thankless, thirty-three-year-old adopted daughter, Lola Marie. Thus, the night Beatrice was killed, Lola Marie was awakened from a deep sleep by a very bright yellow light floating over her bed. This bright yellow light was her mother’s spirit. In utter horror and unable to prevent what happened next, she watched that bizarre, bright yellow light enter her body. At first Lola Marie thought she was dreaming, but that was not the case. Her mother’s dark entity had just entered and taken control of her mind and soul. She was now possessed. In the blink of an eye, Lola Marie unwillingly became her deceased mother’s evil puppet and is forced to perform bloody, vengeful, heinous acts for her, even murder. To ensure her daughter’s compliance, Beatrice uses an extremely painful but unique control mechanism, a tattoo. Lola Marie quickly finds herself trapped in her dead mother’s evil web with little hope of escape. Against all odds, can she find a way to free herself from her dead mother’s voodoo clutches? And if so, at what cost to her? Surviving the Unimaginable By Ruth Janie Webb He beat me with a hammer. He beat me with a bat. He strangled me until all of my breath had gone and I was left for dead. He shoved the barrel of a 22 riffle in my mouth and told me hed blow my brains out and kill the children too. So when he spit on me, bit me, slapped me or kicked me, it didnt seem so bad. Self-esteem? What self-esteem! As bad as the physical abuse was, the mental abuse seemed almost worse. My husband would brag tome that he had other women that were prettier, smarter and more desirable. I was left alone with the children for days at a time. He would leave because the house was too noisy. Hed leave when the bills were due. Hed leave to visit those other women. If I dared ask where hed been, hed beat me yet again. Women who stay in abusive relationships are afraid. Only God can deliver. It takes God to give a woman the strength and ability she needs to step away from this type of demonic, controlling relationship. I know the excuses. I used them myself. I dont have any where to go. There is always somewhere to go. I dont want to leave my stuff. Baby, when youre really ready and you have had enough, you will leave everything. When I left my first husband, I left everything in that house. I went to work and never returned. I only had the clothes on my back. My babies need their daddy. If you dont seek help and leave that abusive relationship, you and your babies will end up dead. He will kill me if I leave. He will kill you if you stay. He will change. No, he wont! Not without Gods help. He has to want Gods help for himself, not because you want him to want God. He said he was sorry. He is sorry if he put his hands on you. He is a coward living in the shell of a man. He loves me. Love is not abusive. He only does it when hes drunk. Then he needs to stop drinking. These are just a few of our excuses. No one deserves to be beaten, no one. Not for any reason. Stop blaming yourself. I thank God that He was with me and allowed me to make it out alive. It was only His divine protection and love that allowed us to make it out alive. You must stop endangering and damaging yourself and your children. Once I gave my life to God, I no longer had low self esteem. I picked up my head and walked in who God said I was. I survived the unimaginable and you can too. Now instead of dwelling on the pain and regret of 29 1/2 years of marriage that nearly killed me and my children, I am using the experience to help others. God is using me to encourage and minister to both men and women who are in abusive relationships. My life is a miracle. My mess had been turned into a message of hope and healing. I pray you allow God to do the same for you.

The Darker Nations

The Darker Nations ebook ISBN: 159558563X
Publisher: The New Press
Author: Vijay Prashad
Number of Pages: 384

Here, from a brilliant young writer, is a paradigm-shifting history of both a utopian concept and global movement—the idea of the Third World. The Darker Nations traces the intellectual origins and the political history of the twentieth century attempt to knit together the world’s impoverished countries in opposition to the United States and Soviet spheres of influence in the decades following World War II. Spanning every continent of the global South, Vijay Prashad’s fascinating narrative takes us from the birth of postcolonial nations after World War II to the downfall and corruption of nationalist regimes. A breakthrough book of cutting-edge scholarship, it includes vivid portraits of Third World giants like India’s Nehru, Egypt’s Nasser, and Indonesia’s Sukarno—as well as scores of extraordinary but now-forgotten intellectuals, artists, and freedom fighters. The Darker Nations restores to memory the vibrant though flawed idea of the Third World, whose demise, Prashad ultimately argues, has produced a much impoverished international political arena.
