Summary:

"This book is the result of my fourteen years as a bandsman in a British cavalry regiment, ending up as a Trumpet Major. Within a year of enlisting, I'd discovered a gay military world and experienced my first gay sex; many squaddies and bandsmen were partial to a bit of cock fun. I was out for most of my career and was at various times protected by both peers and senior ranks. There were no threats and rarely any hostility. I had numerous flirtations and love affairs, and when I got "engaged" to a 16-year-old civilian, my straight friends gave me a party. I learnt much in my army career, of which the most unlikely thing was pride in my sexuality."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Summary:

Elizabeth I was the last English monarch truly to rule the nation; she inherited a weak and divided kingdom yet relentlessly fashioned it into a major world power, and decisively defeated the mightiest invasion fleet ever to approach our shores. Her relationships with the key men in the kingdom were vital to the success of her reign. Her greatest attributes were a shrewd judgement of human nature coupled with the unerring ability to choose and motivate men. During a long and glorious reign, she surrounded herself with the ablest, most energetic and fearless minds in the kingdom. Her retinue was entirely male but the only man she did not choose was a husband, although there was certainly no shortage of suitors. Elizabeth was devoutly religious but embraced the new learning with calculated discrimination. She inspired magnificent architecture, whilst her sea captains sailed great oceans to discover new shores and founded a mighty overseas empire. Centre stage in these heady days of new ideas and new horizons was the royal court, a colourful kaleidoscope of glittering courtiers and important foreign dignitaries, all trying to impress, all jostling for her favours - all the queen's men.

Summary:

All the Queen’s Horses and All the Queen’s Men is the first book in a trilogy of political novels by Chase Baldewyn. Written before Trump’s campaign and election, the trilogy provides insight as to how and why Donald Trump would be elected. The trilogy is based on ethnographic research conducted over a decade on billionaire plutocratic families in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The novel reveals how and why plutocrat billionaires deceive the public and value loyalty over competence as Donald Trump seemingly does, and how plutocrats have worked to eliminate the middle class through deceptive egalitarianism and philanthropy while concurrently disparaging the need for excellence outside of their small peer group of billionaire businessmen. The novel’s protagonist is a plutocrat billionaire, Rolf Lambert, whose deceptive populism is revealed as actual elitism when advising his granddaughter, Berkeley, to model herself after British royalty for which Berkeley pays a heavy price at story’s end.

Summary:

Murphy, the Regulator, returns in All the Queen's Men to face the most complex and deadly challenge of his career. Ranchers across the west report large numbers of cattle stolen and the problem has become so large they refuse to drive their herds to market in the fall. The cattle industry is a large part of the American economy and stock market and if the cattle industry fails the market will collapse and send the country into a deep recession. The Cattlemen's Association turns to Washington for help and their plea falls on the shoulders of William Burke, Special Assistant to the President. Murphy, exhausted from months of searching for the woman he loves, Sally Orr, and the man who violated and caused her to run away, Christopher, takes temporary refuge at his father's farm in Tennessee. Murphy's rest is short-lived, however, when Burke shows up and calls him back into action. In Washington, Burke and Murphy meet with members of the Cattlemen's Association; John Chisum, the most powerful rancher in the country; and Mary Kate Ritchie, a powerful rancher from Kansas with a romantic eye on Murphy. From Washington, Murphy starts an investigation that covers most of the west over a span of many months. The urgency is high as the American economy is at stake and time is short as Murphy must find whoever is behind the devastating plot before the first snowfall of winter ends the cattle drive season and plummets the country into a recession.

Summary:

Locating the Queen's Men presents new and groundbreaking essays on early modern England's most prominent acting company, from their establishment in 1583 into the 1590s. Offering a far more detailed critical engagement with the plays than is available elsewhere, this volume situates the company in the theatrical and economic context of their time. The essays gathered here focus on four different aspects: playing spaces, repertory, play-types, and performance style, beginning with essays devoted to touring conditions, performances in university towns, London inns and theatres, and the patronage system under Queen Elizabeth. Repertory studies, unique to this volume, consider the elements of the company's distinctive style, and how this style may have influenced, for example, Shakespeare's Henry V. Contributors explore two distinct genres, the morality and the history play, especially focussing on the use of stock characters and on male/female relationships. Revising standard accounts of late Elizabeth theatre history, this collection shows that the Queen's Men, often understood as the last rear-guard of the old theatre, were a vital force that enjoyed continued success in the provinces and in London, representative of the abiding appeal of an older, more ostentatiously theatrical form of drama.

Summary:

In My End Is My Beginning is the story of Mary Queen of Scots (1542–87), the tragic heroine par excellence. Queen of an unfamiliar and troubled nation when she was a week old, it was her misfortune to be a pawn in the game of international politics throughout her life. Even in the brief period from 1561 to 1567 when she was ruler of Scotland in fact as well as in name, she was beset with problems that would have defeated a much stronger, more experienced monarch. A talented poet and a charismatic leader, she contended with a treacherous, self-serving nobility, the religious ferment of the Reformation, and the political ambitions of larger and more powerful neighbours. With little real authority and few resources, Mary’s reign was successful, until her disastrous marriage to the dissolute Darnley set in motion the events that brought about her downfall. For the last 20 years of her life she was a prisoner in the hands of her cousin, Elizabeth I of England, and the subject of treacherous plots and conspiracies. A hostage to fortune, she represented a threat and a rallying-point for English Catholics. Her tragic end was inevitable. Yet her life, with all its adventurous, failures and disasters, produced the son – James – who ultimately brought about the union of Scotland and England. In the End Is My Beginning uncovers the true facts of Mary’s life in the context of Anglo-Scottish relations and shows why, after more than 400 years, she remains arguably the greatest character in popular Scottish history.

Summary:

When I see and hear the ubiquitous hype and media coverage for celebrities receiving acclaim after facing their ordeals with breast cancer, I hear words like "bravery," "stamina," "devastating disease," how well they are handling the diagnosis, and how "heroically" they are getting on with their lives." Most of these same celebrities are alive and well after their diagnosis because of the work done by women like my late wife, Lois A. Anderson. Yet most people have never heard of her. If you want to read a book about real bravery, real stamina, and the power to make real changes that matter to the breast cancer story, you need to take the time to read this book. Lois came from a poor family, coming from conditions most of us would never ascend from, and made her mark upon the world. "I do not want to be forgotten," she told me after being diagnosed with stage III breast cancer at the age of thirty-nine. She lived eighteen years after that diagnosis and, in many ways, changed the world with her knowledge, support, and political advocacy. Many throw money at research in an effort to move breast cancer out of the ranks of an incurable cancer into one where most will survive it. Lois didn't have money. She didn't have the media to tell of her many battles. What she did have was a spirit of hope, which she used to battle breast cancer on all fronts. This is the story of a remarkable woman who, in spite of the odds, not only survived but also turned an ordeal that would have devastated most of us into a shining example of what one person can do even when they are facing death. "Sometimes you get the chance to change things," she often told me. In her short lifetime, even with cancer raging through her body, she took the chance and did that very thing. She not only fought her own personal battle with breast cancer but also fought the war against it. Lois pursued such an astonishing life from the moment she came into the world, overcoming many obstacles in her quest to rise above the ordinary, many conquered before breast cancer entered her life. I felt her story had to be told. She lived her short life, coming from very humble beginnings, rising from all of it, making changes she hoped would better everyone, when it ended on January 17, 2011. At the time of her death, she was considered a great breast cancer advocate known at the national level. She was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer at the age of thirty-nine, six days before her fortieth birthday, in 1992. Signs that could have cautioned her remained muted by an unsuspicious bruise she sustained from an injury several months before her fortieth birthday. In time, she was treated for the initial breast cancer and remained cancer-free for almost ten years, until cancer returned in 2001. Then when the odds seemed stacked against her, she fought the disease as a stage IV breast cancer survivor (metastatic breast cancer) from the time of that dire discovery until she died in January 2011. She lived eighteen years from the time she was diagnosed, against all prognostications allowing her only five years of survival. Over the last six months of her life, I began writing a story where I escaped the realities of losing my wife to something I had no control over. In a way, it transitioned into a metaphoric fable, a parallel story of her life. Between the lines, I allowed myself the chance to create an alternate world where the real trials Lois and I experienced on our "last road" together eventually made some sense to me in our unpredictable world. After she died, I began the long process of chronicling her amazing biography and believed I could finish the fictional one. Both stories represent a process of coming to terms with her death and a promise I made to "not let her be forgotten." I began writing her real life story in late February 2011. After I started, I found stories and journals Lois had written about herself tucked away in boxes and old folders throughout the house. Some o
