Summary:

Effective and enduring site restoration involves professionals from many branches of science and engineering. Geologists, hydrologists, chemists, microbiologists and meteorologists all play a part in remediation efforts-as do civil, chemical, mechanical and environmental engineers. When the time comes for all-important design calculations, that's where conflicts between disciplines become apparent. Due to certain differences in educational training, the ability of environmental professionals to perform or review design calculations varies. Bridge the gap with Practical Design Calculations for Groundwater and Soil Remediation. Jeff Kuo's hands-on experience as a consultant and teacher of soil/groundwater remediation informs this collection of the most practical and relevant working information. Written in a user-friendly, "cookbook-style" format, readers can promptly access the necessary information. More than 200 equations, coupled with tables and figures, allow a clear understanding of purposes and procedures. To match the scope of Practical Design Calculations for Groundwater and Soil Remediation, you would have to comb through numerous publications. You may also be taking a chance on data that's already obsolete, due to rapid advancements in remediation technologies. One aspect doesn 't change: basic, straightforward design calculation. Practical Design Calculations for Groundwater and Soil Remediation helps everyone involved in a site restoration project follow the same set of guidelines-for effective results.

Summary:

EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications, 2nd ed. presents a critical two volume review of the methods and applications of EPR (ESR) for the study of free radical processes in solids. Emphasis is on the progress made in the developments in EPR technology, in the application of sophisticated matrix isolation techniques and in the advancement in quantitative EPR that have occurred since the 1st edition was published. Improvements have been made also at theoretical level, with the development of methods based on first principles and their application to the calculation of magnetic properties as well as in spectral simulations. EPR of Free Radicals in Solids II focuses on the trends in applications of experimental and theoretical methods to extract structural and dynamical properties of radicals and spin probes in solid matrices by continuous wave (CW) and pulsed techniques in nine chapters written by experts in the field. It examines the studies involving radiation- and photo-induced inorganic and organic radicals in inert matrices, the high-spin molecules and metal-based molecular clusters as well as the radical pro-cesses in photosynthesis. Recent advancements in environmental applications in-cluding measurements by myon resonance of radicals on surfaces and by quantitative EPR in dosimetry are outlined and the applications of optical detection in material research with much increased sensitivity reviewed. The potential use of EPR in quantum computing is considered in a newly written chapter. This new edition is aimed to experimentalists and theoreticians in research involving free radicals, as well as for students of advanced courses in physical chemis-try, chemical physics, materials science, biophysics, biochemistry and related fields.

Drawing from the author’s teaching and consulting experience, this text provides practical information that addresses the current needs of practicing engineers, scientists, and legal experts in the field. What’s New in This Edition: This latest edition covers important aspects of major design calculations as well as practical and relevant working information for groundwater and soil remediation. Realistic examples are used liberally to illustrate the applications of the design calculations. Many examples are designed to assist the readers in building the right concepts. The text begins with an introductory chapter; it then illustrates the engineering calculations needed during site assessment and remedial investigation. It continues with a discussion on plume migration in soil and groundwater. It then covers the mass-balance concept, reaction kinetics, and types, configurations, and sizing of reactors. The author incorporates important design calculations for commonly used in situ and ex situ soil and groundwater remediation technologies, such as soil venting, air sparging, air stripping, bioremediation, and chemical oxidation, and off-gas treatment technologies. He also presents design calculations for capture zone and optimal well spacing. Includes both SI and US customary units, as well as unit conversions Presents examples that directly follow the design equations Provides discussion that assists engineers in building proper concepts Practical Design Calculations for Groundwater and Soil Remediation, Second Edition also serves as a reference or textbook for students dedicated to the study of site remediation.

Summary:

"A remarkably fine work of creative scholarship." —C. Vann Woodward, New York Review of Books In 1860, when four million African Americans were enslaved, a quarter-million others, including William Ellison, were "free people of color." But Ellison was remarkable. Born a slave, his experience spans the history of the South from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. In a day when most Americans, black and white, worked the soil, barely scraping together a living, Ellison was a cotton-gin maker—a master craftsman. When nearly all free blacks were destitute, Ellison was wealthy and well-established. He owned a large plantation and more slaves than all but the richest white planters. While Ellison was exceptional in many respects, the story of his life sheds light on the collective experience of African Americans in the antebellum South to whom he remained bound by race. His family history emphasizes the fine line separating freedom from slavery.

Summary:

Passed in 1873, the Comstock Act banned 'obscene' materials from the mail without defining obscenity, leaving it open to interpretation by courts that were hostile to free speech. Literature that reflected changing attitudes toward sexuality, religion, and social institutions fell victim to the Comstock Act and related state laws. Dr. Edward Bliss Foote became among the earliest individuals convicted under the law after he mailed a brochure on birth-control methods. For the next four decades, Foote Sr. and his son, Dr. Edward Bond Foote, challenged the Comstock Act in Congress, legislatures, and courts and also offered personal assistance to Comstock defendants. This book chronicles the Footes’ struggle, examining not just the efforts of these cruising champions of freedom of expression and women's rights, but also the larger issues surrounding free speech and censorship in the Gilded Age of American history.

Summary:

This study analyses the case-law of the European Court of Justice on the freedom of establishment and the free movement of capital in matters of direct taxation. The author identifies two areas where cases from the European Court of Justice are especially important: what constitutes discrimination, and which circumstances may justify such discrimination. Among his specific approaches to the complex issues involved may be noted the following: the Court's interpretation of discrimination and restriction, both in general and in particular regarding the freedom of establishment and the free movement of capital; the grounds of justification, according to the rule-of-reason doctrine, accepted by the Court, such as the prevention of tax abuse, the preservation of fiscal coherence, the effectiveness of fiscal supervision, and the fiscal principle of territoriality; grounds rejected by the Court, such as lack of harmonisation, counterbalancing advantages, a new form of establishment being seen as subject to equal treatment, lack of Community competence in the field of tax treaty law, and the protection of tax revenue; the characteristics of national legislation on direct taxation that the Court has found to be in breach of the freedom of establishment and the free movement of capital; the neutrality between different forms of establishment, in the form of either a branch or a subsidiary (the pending Marks & Spencer case is subject to a thorough analysis in this respect); the degree of convergence between the freedom of establishment and the free movement of capital, especially in cases on direct taxation; and the territorial extension of the free movement of capital.
