Summary:

A devilish debut by a brother-sister team invites us into the world of the elite Marlowe School, where some gifted students are having a hell of a year. (Age 14 and up) One night, in cities all across Europe, five children vanish -- only to appear, years later, at an exclusive New York party with a strange and elegant governess. Rumor and mystery follow the Faust teenagers to the city’s most prestigious high school, where they soar to suspicious heights with the help of their benefactor’s extraordinary "gifts." But as the students claw their way up -- reading minds, erasing scenes, stopping time, stealing power, seducing with artificial beauty -- they start to suffer the sideeffects of their own addictions. And as they make further deals with the devil, they uncover secrets more shocking than their most unforgivable sins. At once chilling and wickedly satirical, this contemporary reimagining of the Faustian bargain is a compelling tale of ambition, consequences, and ultimate redemption.

Summary:

Faust stories are found across the ages and the arts. From its earliest to most recent expressions, the Faust figure continues to capture our imagination, dealing with problems and themes that are still relevant for a twenty-first century audience. Of the many variations on the Faust-myth, Goethe's remains especially provocative and laden with meaning and is the work most responsible for determining the subsequent character of the Faust archetype. His Faust reflects an individual who asserts, yet wrestles unrelentingly with the futility of faith, the bankruptcy of knowledge, and the loss of meaning. One of the greatest texts of both German and world literature, Faust, Parts I and II, confronts us with pressing questions about rebellion and suffering, faith and its loss, reality and simulation, order and chaos, weakness and power, technology and human improvement. This monograph offers a new interpretation of Goethe's famous play, emphasising its continuing significance today.

Summary:

"There is no group more mythical than Faust" Julian Cope "When the Germans do something, they don't fuck around" Jean-Herv P ron From the publisher: September 2006 sees the release of this book about Faust, the legendary krautrock group. Fully illustrated, it contains reviews all of the group's records from the period 1970-75 as well as recounting the rise of krautrock and its relation to the social upheavals of the '60s. There is also a discography, bibliographies, live reviews and the text of the group's 1973 manifesto as well as essays on music and time and the group's relation to the work of Frank Zappa. From the dustjacket: In 1970 Polydor Records funded an unusual experiment. They gave some unknown German musicians a retreat in the countryside near Hamburg, equipped it with a studio and their best engineer, then left them free to do as they liked. This is the story of Faust and the music they made between 1970 and 1975, music which continues to inspire and confound listeners to this day. About the author: Andy Wilson has been running the Faust web site, the Faust-Pages (http: //www.faust-pages.com) for over a decade now, during which time he has collected information about the band, interviewed band members and generally researched the group's history. Now he has collected that information into a book. He lives in Hackney, London, and has been listening to Faust for the best part of a lifetime. Summary:

This volume of Max Brand?s short fiction is chock full of the fast paced, deftly plotted stories that made Brand famous. ?Cayenne Charlie? tells the story of Charlie Bird, a redheaded cowpoke so accustomed to trouble he treats jail like a hotel. ?The Bells of San Carlos? introduces Fray Luis, a most formidable member of the clergy. The novella ?Between One and Three? is part Western, part mystery, a story of counterfeiters who elude detection. ?The Gift? features Happy Jack, one of Brand?s most fascinating characters. Happy Jack is on the trail of Sandy Crisp, whose crimes include shooting one of Jack?s friends. The Bells of San Carlos and Other Stories offers stories and novellas long out of print or never printed in their entirety. At first publication, the stories often suffered from editors? cuts to make them fit available page space. Editor Jon Tuska has returned to the original manuscripts to restore Brand?s full texts.

Summary:

W HAT I H A V E attempted in this book is a survey of song; the kind of song which one finds variously described as 'concert', 'art', or sometimes even 'classical song'. 'Concert song' seems the most useful, certainly the least inexact or misleading, of some descriptions, especially since 'art song' sounds primly off putting, and 'classical song' really ought to be used only to refer to songs written during the classical period, i. e. the 18th century. Concert song clearly means the kind of songs one hears sung at concerts or recitals. Addressing myself to the general music-lover who, though he possesses no special knowledge of the song literature, is never theless interested enough in songs and their singers to attend recitals of Lieder or of songs in various languages, I have naturally confined myself to that period of time in which the vast majority of these songs was composed, though not necessarily only to those composers whose songs have survived to be remembered in recital programmes today. I suppose this to be roughly the three centuries covered by the years 1650-1950, though most of the songs we, as audiences, know and love were composed in the middle of this period, in other words in the 19th century.
