Summary:

Luke Hartwell's second novel, Who You Are and Where You Come From, is his most autobiographical. Ironically, it is also his only work of fiction to be written from third person point of view. This award-winning novel follows Arkansas country boy Ben Goodman through childhood and adolescence, focusing on Ben's life after he crosses paths with the book's other protagonists, Pennsylvania-raised brothers Ethan and Daniel Henry. Each boy has a compelling story, and when the sad stories of their separate lives merge into the warm stories of their time spent together, the result is both heartwarming and hopeful. The book is both a coming of age novel and a love story told in fine, understated Southern tradition. Earlier versions of the book appeared under the titles Letters to a Shooting Star and What Daniel Did With His Life.

Summary:

Large print edition. Hartwell's Nathan's Story is a powerful follow-up to his Atom Heart John Beloved. While this is a stand-alone work, reading Atom Heart first is recommended. However, if you're thinking this is going to be the same story told from another character's POV, think again! The introduction of an attractive new character, Harper, adds a new dimension to the narrative. Hartwell intertwines the story of Nathan and Harper with the story of Nathan and John while avoiding a rehash of old information. Like the first book, Nathan's Story makes readers think, covers some controversial ground, can produce tears, and will also bring plenty of smiles.

Summary:

"The world is little, people are little, human life is little. There is only one big thing - desire." - Willa Cather .......... Because Desire reacquaints readers with characters from other Luke Hartwell titles, also providing sequels for a few, the novel is best read after first having read Hartwell's previous works. The fully-prepared reader first will have read the novels Memory & Madness, Who You Are and Where You Come From, Atom Heart John Beloved, Space, and Love Underneath, and also the short stories "Blue South," "Michael," "Nothing Strikes Back!" "Baby Self Hate," and "Yusuf." The short stories are available individually and also conveniently collected in the volume Four Walls & a Passion. Desire begins with a reunion between Mateo and Cody from Memory & Madness. Hartwell then introduces three new characters, including two young brothers in love. The interchanging relationships between these five characters form the bulk of the story. The book's title reflects the novel's theme.

Summary:

A groundbreaking merger of genres, Luke Hartwell's latest novel, Love Underneath, is as distinctive as its predecessors. Using characters and early chapters from his deleted novel Locomotives in Winter, Hartwell has created a beautiful, sexy story of guys who love. Hunter, a high school senior, finds himself with no place to go and ends up sharing a bed with the friend and classmate he once had abandoned. Brandon, who has been in love with Hunter since ninth grade, finds having Hunter in his bed every night an intimidating dream come true. After graduating, the two boys part. Years later Brandon receives an unexpected call from Hunter, who has been married twice and has a son. Now, he's come to realize Brandon was always the love of his life. Love Underneath is a multifaceted novel about human relationships. As Brandon meets Hunter's son, Ben; Ben's best friend, Taylor; Taylor's father, Case, and the gardener, Jorge, the novel takes twists and turns that intrigue and delight. As with all Hartwell fiction, the characterizations, narration, and depth of feeling leave an impact. .......... Luke Hartwell is author of the novels Atom Heart John Beloved, Memory and Madness, Who You Are and Where You Come From, and Space, as well as numerous short stories. Love Underneath, Luke's fifth novel, is available in paperback, e-book, and audiobook formats. The audiobook is narrated by cover model Brad Davis.

Summary:

Baby Self Hate (an earlier version appeared under the title of Toller) is a sultry but funny story of sex and infatuation. As always with Hartwell, the brilliance of the narrative voice shines brightest. Cam, like other Hartwell narrators, is angry but funny, purposeful but confused, and humorous but unexpectedly profound. Although sexy and sought after, Cam sees life darkly and takes solace in fishing. His relationship with a boy he meets in therapy is a wild, unpredictable ride. Hartwell's writing style provides the book the immediacy, honesty, passion, and tension that readers have come to expect. This story represents Hartwell at his best.

Summary:

This collection of Luke Hartwell's short stories--Jimmy, Michael, Nothing Strikes Back!, Handsome Johnny, Hand, and Toller--showcases his ability to create intriguing characters then tell their stories in a voice so accurate readers are transported. "Jimmy" has been compared favorably to "Brokeback Mountain" for its sparse prose and simple power. "Michael" is simply one of the funniest pieces to appear in the gay literary canon. "Nothing Strikes Back!" is a sweet story of an adolescent boy's infatuation with the somewhat older narrator. "Toller" possesses much of the humor found in "Michael" but also elements of Hartwell's groundbreaking novel Atom Heart John Beloved. "Handsome Johnny" is a brief sequel to that novel. Together, these stories are a testament to Hartwell's engaging style and remarkable voice.

Summary:

By turns funny, romantic, erotic, and sad, this evocative novel brilliantly recreates the landscape of late adolescence, when friendships seem eternal and loves reincarnate. Set in Arkansas but first published in Amsterdam under the title Clicking Beat on the Brink of Nada, Cody quickly won praise from reviewers and readers across Europe and North America. So beautiful, brave, and ahead of its time that William S. Burroughs was an early fan, Cody remains remarkably current and continues to be unique in coming of age literature. Even if you have read a previous edition, this new version is a must read. It is a complete rewrite and contains an additional thirty-five pages of material incorporated throughout the book. A haunting vision of young friendship shattered by an outrageously cruel world. Keith Hale's novel aches with adolescent first loves. It is tender, funny, and true. - William S. Burroughs Don't overlook Keith Hale's Clicking Beat on the Brink of Nada. Hale commands much of J.R. Ackerley's honesty, intimacy, and ease of style. Real warmth. - Jonathan Williams Clicking Beat is a must. - RFD Poetically evokes the pathos of early friendships and the frailty of adolescent dreams. - The Advocate Keith Hale has given his novel characters with tenderness, wit, and humanity. You should rush to purchase this book-a remarkable novel that deserves wide readership. - Bay Area Reporter Top of the heap of gay fiction. - Gay Community News

Summary:

That mysterious thing which Catholics call the "Grace of God" does not obliterate, but rather emphasizes and transfigures the natural characteristics of every man upon whom it comes with power. It was the same element in Frank - the same root-principle, at least - that made him do preposterous things connected with bread and butter and a railway train; that drove him from Cambridge in defiance of all common-sense and sweet reasonableness; that held him still to that deplorable and lamentable journey with his two traveling companions; and that ultimately led him to his death.

Summary:

Four Walls and a Passion contains five of Luke Hartwell's best stories. In "Hooves are a Horse's Glue (But You Still Need a Nail for the Shoe)," a high school senior in small town Arkansas finds a new boy in class on the first day of school--a handsome exchange student from Turkey whose presence in town causes a stir. As the friendship develops, hearts and minds are stirred as well, especially when the young Turk attempts to teach his new American friend the traditional Turkish sport of oil wrestling. "Blue South" (formerly "Jimmy") relates the reunion of two friends separated for twenty years while one was in prison. The reunification is haunting in many ways, as the narrator discovers truths he never knew. "Nothing Strikes Back!" and "Space" (a rewrite of Hartwell's "Nathan's Story") involve a younger boy infatuated with an older boy. Both stories are tender and beautiful and portray adolescent longing and older boy responsibility adeptly and honestly. "Baby Self Hate" (a rewrite of "Toller") is an account of an unlikely friendship between two boys who meet in a group session, one attending over anger issues, the other there for help with his depression. The story itself is anything but depressing, with humor and sex dripping from the pages. As with his longer fiction, Hartwell here creates characters that stick with the reader long after the stories end. These well-written stories, with their compelling narrative voices, are must-reads for those who appreciate moving short fiction.
