Summary:

It is late autumn 1756, Jacob Murray and a band of rangers are locked in desperate pursuit of a Delaware raiding party that overran and massacred the garrison at Fort Stevens. Among the women and children taken prisoner is Jacob's wife, Maggie. Driven by guilt and anger, Jacob sets a furious pace that leads his men into dangerous unknown territory. Meanwhile the fate of the prisoners is made all the more tenuous when raiding party scouts report the death of Chief Tewea at Kittanning, and Maggie will soon be forced to reconsider everything she has ever thought about the 'savages' that have inflicted such havoc on her life. In a world at war where blood debts are constantly paid and incurred, decisions made can change the course of lives forever. For Maggie, Jacob and their son James, the pull of their blood will draw them into a winter none of them could foresee. The fourth book in the award-winning Gauntlet Runner series, Blood Lines once again transports readers to colonial America during the French and Indian War and offers a clear unsentimental glimpse into the history of the period through the eyes of its characters....

Summary:

Blood Lines: Myth, Indigenism, and Chicana/o Literature examines a broad array of texts that have contributed to the formation of an indigenous strand of Chicano cultural politics. In particular, this book exposes the ethnographic and poetic discourses that shaped the aesthetics and stylistics of Chicano nationalism and Chicana feminism. Contreras offers original perspectives on writers ranging from Alurista and Gloria Anzaldúa to Lorna Dee Cervantes and Alma Luz Villanueva, effectively marking the invocation of a Chicano indigeneity whose foundations and formulations can be linked to U.S. and British modernist writing. By highlighting intertextualities such as those between Anzaldúa and D. H. Lawrence, Contreras critiques the resilience of primitivism in the Mexican borderlands. She questions established cultural perspectives on "the native," which paradoxically challenge and reaffirm racialized representations of Indians in the Americas. In doing so, Blood Lines brings a new understanding to the contradictory and richly textured literary relationship that links the projects of European modernism and Anglo-American authors, on the one hand, and the imaginary of the post-revolutionary Mexican state and Chicano/a writers, on the other hand.

For Drink the Air '... a beautifully nuanced, gentle and moving tale about grief and love ... a genuinely affective and yet unprepossessing work, which surprised and impressed the judges with the authenticity of the emotions conveyed, the author's literary skill, and his poetic control of his material.'

Summary:

'I think you know who killed your stepfather', said Wexford, and so begins this scintillating collection of long and short stories by the world's best living crime writer, Ruth Rendell. It was clear both to Wexford and Burden that Tom Peterlee was not killed for £360, but various people would have liked them to believe the lie. It is a case which reminds the Chief Inspector that there is only a thin line dividing the policeman from the criminal. The criminal impulse may be present in the most routine or intimate situation. The book ends with The Strawberry Tree, a disturbingly evocative novella-length tale of lost innocence, set on the island of Majorca. It is a triumphant conclusion to a collection of horror stories that linger in the mind.

Summary:

Anthony J Randall looks at the canonical victims of Jack the Ripper and investigates the family background of their paternal and maternal lines. Perhaps their histories reveal the origins of their destiny. Perhaps their family backgrounds hold the seeds to the paths they trod. In this searching investigation many birth, marriage and death certificates, and over two hundred census returns, have been transcribed and presented. This book examines the history and genealogy of the 'canonical' victims to guide the reader from the industrial centres of Staffordshire, the wide marshes of Sussex and the woodlands of the Forest of Dean to the east end of London and the deprivation of Whitechapel.
