Summary:

Perfect strangers. A perfect holiday. The perfect murder. In the standalone novel Rush of Blood, internationally bestselling author Mark Billingham puts a sinister twist on a deceptively innocent topic: the beach vacation. Three British couples meet around the pool on their Florida holiday and become fast friends. But on Easter Sunday, the last day of their vacation, tragedy strikes: the fourteen-year-old daughter of an American vacationer goes missing, and her body is later found floating in the mangroves. When the shocked couples return home to the U.K., they remain in contact, and over the course of three increasingly fraught dinner parties they come to know one another better. But they don’t always like what they find. Buried beneath these apparently normal exteriors are some unusual kinks and unpleasant vices. Then, a second girl goes missing, in Kent—not far from where any of the couples lives. Could it be that one of these six has a secret far darker than anybody can imagine? Ambitiously plotted and laced with dark humor, Rush of Blood is a first-rate suspense novel about the danger of making new friends in seemingly sunny places.

Summary:

Noel Robertson was born during WWII. He worked hard to gain qualifications in school, banking and then general construction. All the time Noel had a nagging question - "Why are we so poor and who are these people controlling everything?" A Jewish friend told him that 'only fools work'! This made him think, so he embarked on various self-employed activities. Becoming ill at age 51, he has not worked since. He started his research into the history of mankind which took place way before all those Biblical stories - he needed to know the origins of our species and set out to find the 'missing' link according to Charles Darwin. Time allowed Noel to read numerous books allied to this subject, including those written by Zecharia Sitchin setting out his translations of the Sumerian Tablets. Noel basically found out where we, as a human race, came from. It was these findings that led to Black Blood = 21st Century Oil Rush. This brings right up to date the reasons for wars, both historical and current, which mankind has had to endure. Man has simply given his mind away! If you think you are free, then think again. It is a journey from pre-history, through Biblical times, the renaissance period to the present. Imperialist administrations are still fighting wars over the 'control' of modern energy - oil and gas - and indeed human minds. Man is being drawn in with most of the world not realising and understanding the covert powers at work here. Black Blood = 21st Century Oil Rush provides some very interesting answers - true understanding is highly controversial. Just substitute the word 'God' for 'space-ship' and 'global' for New World Order and enter Noel's world.

Is it coincidence that most of the massage parlours in the city have suddenly closed overnight? What readers are saying about A Rush of Blood: 'A thoroughly enjoyable and absorbing read. Summary:

In the War on Terror, there are no set battles. The fanatical enemy adheres to no warrior code or international law. Their only desire is to kill—or be killed. That’s where the snipers of the U.S. Marines, Army, and Navy SEALs come in . . . Here, in their own words, are the compelling true stories of the snipers whose sole purpose is to eliminate the enemy with a single bullet. From Iraq to Afghanistan, this is life and death as seen through the scope of a high-powered rifle. These snipers’ stories illustrate the mental discipline and psychological strength that they must possess to accomplish their missions, the effect a sniper’s skill and reputation has on the enemy, and how they deal with the stark reality of their work after the target is neutralized—and after a sniper returns to civilian life. Part wartime chronicle, part psychological exploration of the warrior mind, and part exposé into a secretive brotherhood of military snipers, Hunters is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn the truth about war when it’s fought one kill at a time. Includes photographs

Summary:

Winner of the 2015 LGBT Studies award presented by the Lambda Literary Foundation Scholars of US and transatlantic slavery have largely ignored or dismissed accusations that Black Americans were cannibalized. Vincent Woodard takes the enslaved person’s claims of human consumption seriously, focusing on both the literal starvation of the slave and the tropes of cannibalism on the part of the slaveholder, and further draws attention to the ways in which Blacks experienced their consumption as a fundamentally homoerotic occurrence. The Delectable Negro explores these connections between homoeroticism, cannibalism, and cultures of consumption in the context of American literature and US slave culture. Utilizing many staples of African American literature and culture, such as the slave narratives of OlaudahEquiano, Harriet Jacobs, and Frederick Douglass, as well as other less circulated materials like James L. Smith’s slave narrative, runaway slave advertisements, and numerous articles from Black newspapers published in the nineteenth century, Woodard traces the racial assumptions, political aspirations, gender codes, and philosophical frameworks that dictated both European and white American arousal towards Black males and hunger for Black male flesh. Woodard uses these texts to unpack how slaves struggled not only against social consumption, but also against endemic mechanisms of starvation and hunger designed to break them. He concludes with an examination of the controversial chain gang oral sex scene in Toni Morrison’s Beloved, suggesting that even at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century, we are still at a loss for language with which to describe Black male hunger within a plantation culture of consumption.

Summary:

This “powerful debut novel” follows two cousins on a dangerous road trip from New York to Las Vegas (Booklist, starred review). Odessa Rose is the kind of guy who gives the term “hair-trigger temper” a whole new meaning. His violent nature has, more than once, produced blood. Dess was a college wrestling star who blew it all just shy of graduation when he lost a match and beat another wrestler to a pulp. Since his inglorious dismissal from college, he’s been parking cars for a living in downtown New York. It’s there that his cousin Gary finds him and lures him away to Las Vegas. Gary has some uncontrollable impulses of his own: hugely overweight, he’s a compulsive gambler, playing fast and loose with thousands of dollars. But now there’s an enforcer tailing him, a sunglasses-wearing thug who has no trouble breaking hands, arms, legs. Gary needs protection in Vegas. Who better than his strong, volatile cousin Dess? What do you do when you’re at a crossroads in life? When you want to be a different person than the one who’s made all the wrong choices? When your strength has become your greatest weakness? Headlock is “a brutal and potent debut novel . . . A grim, suspenseful drama to the end” (Valley Advocate). “Odessa Rose has a violent temper and a wrestler’s strength, both inherited from his Russian immigrant grandfather, having skipped the generation of his father the economics professor . . . Gary’s uncontrolled appetites and Dess’s uncontrolled anger add to the tension of the trip, which is really about self-examination and redemption. The cousins struggle with the Rose family legend of a grandfather who fought hard and worked hard for the sake of the family, a family from which they are alienated. A powerful debut novel with fascinating characters.” —Booklist, starred review
