Summary:

Whether in the form of Christmas trees in town squares or prayer in school, fierce disputes over the separation of church and state have long bedeviled this country. Both decried and celebrated, this principle is considered by many, for right or wrong, a defining aspect of American national identity. Nearly all discussions regarding the role of religion in American life build on two dominant assumptions: first, the separation of church and state is a constitutional principle that promotes democracy and equally protects the religious freedom of all Americans, especially religious outgroups; and second, this principle emerges as a uniquely American contribution to political theory. In Please Don't Wish Me a Merry Christmas, Stephen M. Feldman challenges both these assumptions. He argues that the separation of church and state primarily manifests and reinforces Christian domination in American society. Furthermore, Feldman reveals that the separation of church and state did not first arise in the United States. Rather, it has slowly evolved as a political and religious development through western history, beginning with the initial appearance of Christianity as it contentiously separated from Judaism. In tracing the historical roots of the separation of church and state within the Western world, Feldman begins with the Roman Empire and names Augustine as the first political theorist to suggest the idea. Feldman next examines how the roles of church and state variously merged and divided throughout history, during the Crusades, the Italian Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the British Civil War and Restoration, the early North American colonies, nineteenth-century America, and up to the present day. In challenging the dominant story of the separation of church and state, Feldman interprets the development of Christian social power vis--vis the state and religious minorities, particularly the prototypical religious outgroup, Jews.

Summary:

During the early years of the AIDS epidemic, thousands of Americans became infected with HIV through the nation's blood supply. Because little reliable information existed at the time AIDS first began showing up in hemophiliacs and in others who had received transfusions, experts disagreed about whether blood and blood products could transmit the disease. During this period of great uncertainty, decisionmaking regarding the blood supply became increasingly difficult and fraught with risk. This volume provides a balanced inquiry into the blood safety controversy, which involves private sexual practices, personal tragedy for the victims of HIV/AIDS, and public confidence in America's blood services system. The book focuses on critical decisions as information about the danger to the blood supply emerged. The committee draws conclusions about what was done--and recommends what should be done to produce better outcomes in the face of future threats to blood safety. The committee frames its analysis around four critical area Product treatment--Could effective methods for inactivating HIV in blood have been introduced sooner? Donor screening and referral--including a review of screening to exlude high-risk individuals. Regulations and recall of contaminated blood--analyzing decisions by federal agencies and the private sector. Risk communication--examining whether infections could have been averted by better communication of the risks.

Summary:

There's no shortage of "expert" advice for the new mother: books, doctors, and well-meaning grandmothers liberally give opinions on what you should be doing and how you should be feeling. But I Wish Someone Had Told Me is not a book of shoulds: it is a book about how women really handle the joys, the challenges, and the problems of being a mother. During the course of her interviews with more than sixty new moms, Nina Barrett made an important discovery. No one knows the secret: we are all putting our motherhood together from scratch. This collection of tales from the front addresses universal topics from labor (yes, it hurts), to marriage (babies may create a strain rather than a bond), to daycare (there is no Mary Poppins), to everyday life with a baby (what exactly does a newborn do all day?). This book by mothers for mothers will instill confidence in all new mothers who fear that every other mother knows something that they do not.

Summary:

As Serena sat at her desk, she placed her mug of black coffee on the cup holder. Without coffee, Serena was no good to anybody. She had always needed the caffeine kick in the morning. Looking through the appointment book, she noticed that she had a full day ahead of her, and through this, she gave a big sigh. If only something exciting would happen to her as it did in the novels. Then she realised that they were make believe and not real. Switching on the computer and just double-checking that all was in order on her desk, she got up to go to the toilet before she started her day. As she entered the staff toilets, she was greeted by her friend Abbie, who had been working there roughly the same time as Serena, and they had become good friends. Looking good, Serena! Had a good weekend? asked Abbie in a welcoming voice. Just the normal, went to hairdressers, had a colour and cut, saw my mom, and just lounged about. Really nothing out the norm, she said sounded disappointed. How about you? she asked. Nothing with me really. Just found out that my sister is expecting her first, so quite thrilled with that and you know still looking for a man, she said, smiling and laughing at the same time. Serena went into the cubicle, and, once she had finished, she went to wash her hands. Abbie had left the toilets and returned to her desk, leaving Serena all by herself. As she looked at herself, she noticed that she was looking quite presentable for a Monday morning in her grey trouser suit and black heels. Her dark brown hair was loose and fell on to her shoulders. She applied a little bit more gloss to her lips; she did not like wearing make-up as she liked her skin to breathe, and this was the best it got. Not bad, she said to herself. She left the toilets once she had washed her hands and made her way back to the office, thinking of the work load that was waiting for her that day.
