Summary:

Jim sprang back on to the truck of the violently rocking wagon, and stared across at Manatasee. She saw him and pointed her assegai at his face. Then he saw the length of slow-match had been exposed across the last yard of trampled earth below the mound on which the queen stood. The swift flame shot along it, leaving the fuse blackened and twisted as it burned. Jim clenched his jaws and waited for the explosion. A powerful enemy. A land of second chances. Jim Courtney is protected by all the wealth and influence that his family's successful business, the Courtney Brothers Trading Company, can provide in the Dutch-owned colonies of South Africa. Louisa Leuven is an orphaned young woman who escaped the plague only to be unjustly imprisoned and transported to the Cape. When a storm destroys her prison ship, Jim is her only hope of escape. But Louisa and Jim have greater adventures in the African wilds ahead of them: they must flee from Dutch forces who seek not only to recapture their prisoner, but also to hunt down and hang Jim Courtney - and punish the other member of the Courtney family, however they can... A Courtney Series adventure - Book 3 in the Birds of Prey trilogy

Summary:

We know the tales of Columbus and Captain Cook, yet much earlier mariners made equally bold and world-changing voyages. In Beyond the Blue Horizon, archaeologist and historian Brian Fagan tackles his richest topic yet: the enduring quest to master the oceans, the planet's most mysterious terrain. From the moment when ancient Polynesians first dared to sail beyond the horizon, Fagan vividly explains how our mastery of the oceans changed the course of human history. What drove humans to risk their lives on open water? How did early sailors unlock the secrets of winds, tides, and the stars they steered by? What were the earliest ocean crossings like? With compelling detail, Fagan reveals how seafaring evolved so that the forbidding realms of the sea gods were transformed from barriers into a nexus of commerce and cultural exchange. From bamboo rafts in the Java Sea to triremes in the Aegean, from Norse longboats in the North Atlantic to sealskin kayaks in Alaska, Fagan crafts a captivating narrative of humanity's urge to challenge the unknown and seek out distant shores.

Summary:

In Beyond The Blue Horizon Alexander Frater reveals and relives the romance and breathtaking excitement of the legendary Imperial Airways Eastbound Empire service – the world’s longest and most adventurous scheduled air route. Written with an infectious passion, this is an extraordinarily original and genre-defining piece of travel writing by one of our most highly respected travel correspondents. ‘Whether being mown down by stampeding Baghdad-bound passengers in Cairo airport, or battling with Indian Airline staff (and failing) to reconfirm six vital going-on flights from Delhi, or being lured unwittingly into a souvenir shop selling pornographic wood carvings in Lombok, or hitting tropical cyclones Ferdinand in a 748 en route from Sumba to Bali, Frater rises above it all with humour, style and a wonderfully sharp eye’ Evening Standard

Summary:

An extensive well-manicured lawn on the English speaking northern half of the imaginary lush tropical isle of Blue Horizon facilitates the staging of the beginning of an interactive narrative lasting three days featuring three main characters among several others. The chief characters are Charley "Charcoal" Cole who's a witty and humorous corporate lawyer who's few years from being a sexagenarian, his friend, - a gorgeous and vivacious young mathematics teacher (Vivia Soucha) who's just about half of his age, and in whom he has a deep personal interest, Maynard Navarre (affectionately called Mo), - a native of the French speaking part of the isle and who's meeting Charcoal for the first time. He's also the boyfriend of Charley's daughter, - Charlotte, and Dassa, - a warm and friendly young woman who suffers from a slight language disorder known as malapropism. Other characters include but not limited to the affable, ultra wealthy four times widowed Mr. Fatima Moreton who owns at least ten percent of the properties on the isle, the famed couple Edward Blake (a cartoonist and marriage officer), his wife, - the beautiful Andrea Jules who loves singing especially to children, members of the Navarre family especially Maynard's rambunctious fifteen year old nephew Antoine, Charley's handsome adult son, - Charleston, and the latter's sweetheart, - Carolina Southby. Oblivious to the hostess Mrs. Moreton, the organizing and staging of the social coincided with Valentines' day and what was expected to be a normal afternoon discussing the community's interests turned out to be a splendid occasion for couples and friends to reaffirm their love and commitment to each other's significant 'half'. It was also an opportune time for 'Charcoal' to cleverly calculate his every move in getting to Vivia's heart. She too had expectations and was fully prepared for any eventuality which brought an interesting end to day one. Arguably, day two, - a public holiday held the most entertainment for everyone, - many hours full of euphoric enjoyment including a large magical-like fair, sheer happiness at the races, a significant and fabulous birthday party, a spectacular beach get together and more. The story begins to unwind and ends on day three when the chief players are taken on an educational tour of the Navarre's extensive livestock and horse racing farms where they spend extended hours gaining knowledge, learning about farm animals and many and varied aspects of horse racing.

Heard in stage revivals, film soundtracks, jazz and cabaret, and recorded by performers as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, and Rod Stewart, these songs are the closest thing America has to a classical repertoire of song. In addition to recounting each song's inspiration, creation, and enduring popularity, America's Songs shows how these "standards" mirror American life from the years before World War I through the years after Vietnam.
