Summary:

Breaking the Spell is Daniel Dennett's most innovative and important work yet; it offers a profound challenge to society and a compelling new history of belief. In this provocative and timely book, Dennett seeks to uncover the origins of religion, and discusses why and how different faiths have commanded allegiance and shaped so many lives. He argues passionately for the need to understand this phenomenon and offers a truly original and comprehensive explanation for religion. What was the psychological and cultural soil in which it first took root? How did it evolve? Is it the product of blind evolutionary instinct or of rational choice? Dennett shows how these ideas could have spread from individual superstitions, via shamanism and the early `wild' strains of religion to today's institutionalized systems. Dennett brings religion into the realm of real public debate - and, in so doing, he breaks the spell.

Few forces in the world are as potent as religion: it comforts people in their suffering and inspires them to both magnificent and terrible deeds. In this provocative and timely book, Daniel C. Dennett seeks to uncover the origins of religion and discusses how and why different faiths have shaped so many lives, whether religion is an addiction or a genuine human need, and even whether it is good for our health. Summary:

For all the thousands of books that have been written about religion, few until this one have attempted to examine it scientifically: to ask why—and how—it has shaped so many lives so strongly. Is religion a product of blind evolutionary instinct or rational choice? Is it truly the best way to live a moral life? Ranging through biology, history, and psychology, Daniel C. Dennett charts religion’s evolution from “wild” folk belief to “domesticated” dogma. Not an antireligious screed but an unblinking look beneath the veil of orthodoxy, Breaking the Spell will be read and debated by believers and skeptics alike.

Summary:

Breaking the Spell: An Exploration of Human Perception examines how people have become largely disconnected from a living, energetic universe through social conditioning. Over generations humanity has lost much of its creative spirit, imagination, and perceptual faculties. In this book the author addresses how we should 'break the spell' of our conditioned perceptions and learn to manage and develop our emotional, mental, and physical energies. Through such chapters as Managing One's Energy, Being Vigilant, and Stepping Away, the author explains in very simple language the necessity for each person to regain their focus, inner calm, and to observe the chaotic impacts that surround them. The author also discusses how a person can refine their perceptions through inner intent. The book also contains an inspiring collection of thoughts; and an Appendix on the misunderstandings of modern day spirituality. In these distracting times it is imperative that each person learns to empower themselves by learning to harness and develop their personal energies. This timely book explains just how to 'break the spell' of our hypnotic world.

Summary:

Kids always provoke parents by doing the very thing that irritates them. Sometimes, when things get bad, you start to think your kids are out to get you while your kids may come to believe you hate them because they are fundamentally bad. Breaking the Spell presents a radical new view of children, not as profit seeking, power hungry opportunists, but as poor scientists who actively poke and prod you to find out how responsible they are for what's making you miserable. Using scores of clinical examples, Dr. Steve Foreman helps parents step out of the cycle of misery and discipline more positively, effectively, and comfortably.

Summary:

Fairy tales have been recorded and recited for centuries, providing generation with a rich source of information regarding human experiences and the universality of shared worlds. However, fairy tales are more than a source of the expanded 'golden rules' to expose readers and listeners to the consequences of bad behavior and the multitude of rewards for good behavior; they are windows into the individual and cultural personalities of the worlds depicted in each story. They are narratives that reflect unconscious as well as interpersonal worlds that mirror the human community. Fairy tales point to ways individuals and societies can find healing and wisdom through these narrative presentations. Past analyses from a Jungian perspective have focused on archetypes, or paradigms of primordial motifs and meanings, within these powerful narratives. In this dissertation, in contradistinction to the plethora of Jungian analyses, we will explore fairy tales through a relational psychodynamic lens, with an emphasis on attachment theory as applied to selected stories. In doing so, we will interpret fairy tales from a larger psychological frame of reference. Four fairy tales will be analyzed: Cinderella and The Aged Mother by the Brothers Grimm and The Child in the Grave and Grandmother by Hans Christian Andersen. By using a psychoanalytic hermeneutic lens with a focus on attachment theory in order to examine the phenomenon of complicated grief, or the inability to grieve, we will discern the relevance of relational reading these fairy tales that will in turn offer new ways of seeing both additional psychological meaning and insight into the nature of complicated grief as depicted in these stories. In utilizing this relational approach with an emphasis on attachment theory to analysis, this dissertation will examine imagery, symbols, and narratives within each story, illustrating how attachment patterns can often shed new light on one's grieving process.
